Born and raised in southwestern Ohio, he went to the southeastern part of the state to attend Ohio University, Athens, in 1970. Hammons graduated from OU in 1977. His undergraduate degree included the dual majors of communications with a journalism focus, and health education with a psychology focus.After graduation, Hammons lived primarily in San Diego until 1992 when he moved to the Arizona Sonoran Desert.
